Practical exercise (if you don't know your account information on the tinyRealm.com server, email me ( my address is shown below) and I'll send it to you ):

1. Use the ping command to find the minimum, average and maximum, round trip, time to 
the following internet sites:  hit <ctrl> "C"  to stop the pinging action

ping google.com          (located in Temple, Texas, USA) 
and 
ping ed-karen.com
          (located in Salem, Oregon, USA) 
and 
ping www.cubeengine.com        (a Dutch location) 

Use at least 10 pings to get a valid average and remember to record the time of day.

2. use the traceroute command to find the number of hops that are required to connect to:

traceroute google.com         (located in Tmple, Texas, USA) 
and   
traceroute ed-karen.com           (located in  Salem, Oregon, USA) 
and 
traceroute www.cubeengine.com        (a Dutch location) 

Try at least 3 traceroute commands to get a valid average and remember to record the time 
of day.

3. Use the nslookup command to find the ip address associated with "www.cubeengine.com" : 

    nslookup  www.cubeengine.com 

    What ip address comes up for www.cubeengine.com
 

    What name server was used and what was its name? 
 

 4. Use the dig command to find more about cnn.com : 

    dig cnn.com

    How many servers are serving up the news?


  How many authoritative names servers (NS) do they have?

5. Go to this web-page http://ComputerGeeks.com/ and tell me:

a) How many "Hexadecimal Visitors" have come here (keep it in Hex). 

b) How many bits (exactly) would it take to store the number of visitors. 
 

6. Go to this web-page http://www.geek.com/welcome.htm/ and tell me:

Are you a "Wanna-be / Beginner Geek", an "Intermediate Geek", an "Advanced Geek" or a "Super Geek". Read the whole article and justify your answer :-) Consider it a cultural study of word redefinitions.
